Reviews

I grew up loving and listening to Tutti’s Trombones and still enjoy it today.  So, imagine my excitement when this album arrived.  More intriguing were the group of players brought together for this recording.  How would so many players from so many different backgrounds come together to make a recording reminiscent of something that says ‘Lassus Trombones’.  But they did.  I know many of the players on this recording so I’m not going to single anyone out individually but just to say the playing on here is terrific.  There are some magnificent solos and the sound coming from the usual suspects at the bottom end is of course world class.  The ensemble playing is fabulous too.  If you listen with a careful ear you can pick out some of the individuals whose names you may recognise and it is interesting to hear the varying styles of playing all coming together to create an impressive homogenising sound.

Listening Lassus Trombone I can hear the cohesiveness of the ensemble. Although you may think these talented trombonists could play this music in their sleep, it takes a special group of individuals to pull off a project like this. There are hurdles to overcome such as scheduling, selection of pieces, and where to record (not to mention recording 19 tracks in two weekends!). Although the musicians have spent a combined 500 years playing their instruments, this group had never played together prior to this project.

Lassus Trombones is a recording that ranges across a wide set of musical styles. It puts on display the playing of some very skilful players indeed. I have no hesitation in recommending this album to anyone interested in fine ensemble recordings and, particularly, if you love the sound of the trombone as much I do.
